Robert Frank es un fotógrafo y adicionalmente es un cineasta americano que ha sido sobresaliente en el mundo de la fotografía.

Robert Frank nació en medio de riquezas ya que era hijo de una familia judía en Suiza que poseía mucho dinero, Robert tuvo esa vocación por la fotografía no tanto por gusto sino más que todo por evadir las responsabilidades de hacerse cargo de los negocios familiares.

Fue educado en el mundo de la fotografía por algunos fotógrafos y diseñadores de la época.

El primer libro que publicó Robert Frank fue en el año 1946, esta publicación lleva por nombre 40 Fotos, este libro fue un medio para Robert para lograr hacerse propaganda como fotógrafo, Robert es un hombre muy selectivo que se atrevía hasta retocar imágenes de otros autores.

Al año siguiente en 1947 Robert decide irse a Estados Unidos, consiguió un empleo como fotógrafo en una revista de moda llamada Harper’s Bazaar en donde conoce a fotógrafos importantes de aquella época (Richard Avedon, Lisette Model, entre otros), al poco tiempo Robert comienza a viajar por América del Sur y Europa.

Robert Frank comenzo sus inicios como fotógrafo en Estados Unidos

Al paso del tiempo publica 2 libros más, donde las tomas fotográficas fueron realizadas en Perú, que por cierto ésta publicación lleva por nombre Perú el mismo país donde las tomó, regresando a Estados Unidos en el año 1950.

Precisamente en el año 1950, fue un año muy importante para Frank, ya que despues que había conocido a Edward Steichen un fotógrafo muy importante y reconocido por su exposición The Family of Man y por ser unos de los mayores representantes del pictoralismo; formó parte en la presentación del grupo 51 American Photographers en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York.

En ese mismo año conoce a la persona que hoy en día es su esposa, una artista pintora que lleva por nombre Mary Lockspeiser, tuvieron su primer hijo que se llama Pablo.

Al pasar más tiempo en Estados Unidos comenzó a sentir que ya no le gustaba, por la gran importancia que tenía el dinero, llegando a la conclusión que Estados Unidos para él era un país lleno de soledad y tristeza reflejándolo en sus fotografías.

Decidió viajar temporalmente a París con su familia, luego en el año 1953 se traslada de nuevo a Nueva York trabajando como periodista fotográfico independiente para varias revistas y dos años más tarde viaja por todo Estado Unidos captando imágenes de todas las clases sociales que existen llevando a su familia consigo obteniendo de esa travesía 28.000 mil fotografías de las cuales 83 fueron tomadas para ser publicadas en The Americans (Los Americanos).

Mientras estaba en la travesía de tomar fotografía por todo Estados Unidos, nace una segunda criatura que lleva por nombre Andrea ella nació en el año 1954.

Robert Frank se volvió a casar en el año 1970 con su segunda esposa llamada June Leaf, que era una artista pintora y escultora.

En el año 1974 muere su hija en un accidente aéreo y su hijo murió en 1994 por padecer de una enfermedad de esquizofrenia en un centro psiquiátrico.

Robert Frank es considerado hoy por hoy uno de los mejores fotógrafos ya que aunque muchas veces se cansó de fotografiar porque ya estaba cansado se siguió considerando el mejor.

En la actualidad Robert vive como un solitario en una cabaña, y sale a relucir como una luz intermitente cuando él lo desea.

Robert Frank también hizo diversas películas entre ellas se pueden mencionar:

1. Pull My Daisy en el año 1959.
2. Sin of Jesus en el año 1960.
3. Rolling Stones, Cocksucker Blues en el año 1972.
4. Keep Busy en el año 1975.
